Oxford Surveyor — Independent Chartered Surveyors Based in Oxfordshire

We're a team of qualified surveyors with extensive knowledge of the Oxfordshire property market. We've been helping buyers and sellers make informed decisions since 2009.

Built on Local Knowledge and a Genuine Passion for Property

Oxford Surveyor was founded in 2009 by James Thornton, a surveyor who had spent a decade working for large national firms and grown frustrated by the one-size-fits-all approach to property surveys.

"I kept seeing clients receive survey reports that were technically correct but practically useless," James recalls. "Long on boilerplate, short on actual advice. People were making the biggest financial decisions of their lives with very little real guidance."

So James set up Oxford Surveyor with a clear ambition: to provide genuinely independent, personal surveying services where clients could speak directly to their surveyor, ask questions, and get straight answers. That philosophy hasn't changed.

Today, we're a small but experienced team of independent surveyors covering the full Oxfordshire area. Our surveyors have extensive knowledge of everything from Victorian terraces in Cowley to Cotswold stone farmhouses near Burford. We understand how the local property market works — and how to protect you within it.

Our Values as Independent Chartered Surveyors

Every survey we carry out is guided by three core principles that set Oxford Surveyor apart from larger, impersonal firms.

Independence

We work solely in your interest. As independent surveyors, we have no referral arrangements with estate agents, builders or mortgage brokers. Our only job is to give you an honest, objective assessment.

Personal Service

You speak directly to your surveyor — before, during and after the survey. No call centres, no account managers. Real people who understand your specific property situation and care about the outcome.

Thoroughness

We never rush a survey. Our surveyors spend as long as it takes to properly inspect a property and document every finding. Your peace of mind is worth every extra minute on site.

Meet Your Oxford Surveyor Team

Our surveyors have extensive experience across residential property in Oxford and throughout the Oxfordshire area. Every member of our team is dedicated to delivering quality surveying services.

James Thornton, founder and principal chartered surveyor at Oxford Surveyor

James Thornton

Founder & Principal Surveyor

James founded Oxford Surveyor in 2009 after 10 years with national surveying practices. He has a particular passion for older and non-standard properties, having surveyed everything from Grade II listed farmhouses in the Cotswolds to 1930s semis in Abingdon. James grew up in Oxfordshire and knows the local property market inside out.

Outside of surveying, James coaches junior cricket at his local club, is a keen runner, and is restoring a period cottage near Woodstock with his family — though he jokes it keeps him honest about what buyers face.

Sarah Mitchell, associate chartered surveyor at Oxford Surveyor

Sarah Mitchell

Associate Surveyor

Sarah joined Oxford Surveyor in 2014, bringing five years of experience in residential surveying and property valuation from her time with a London-based firm. She specialises in party wall matters and new home surveys, and has built a loyal following of repeat clients throughout West Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse.

Sarah is a passionate advocate for first-time buyers and often goes above and beyond to explain findings in plain English to those purchasing their first home. She lives in Witney with her partner and two young children.

David Harper, senior building surveyor at Oxford Surveyor

David Harper

Senior Building Surveyor

David has over 20 years of experience in building surveying and structural inspection, with a background in commercial and residential construction. He joined the team in 2018 and handles our most complex Level 3 surveys, expert witness work, and specialist defect investigations. His construction background means he understands exactly how and why buildings fail.

David is an expert in traditional building materials and techniques — invaluable in a county where stone cottages, lime mortar and ancient oak beams are part of everyday residential life. He is based near Banbury.
